
Gäddede
Gäddede is a charming mountain village located along the famous Vildmarksvägen in northern Jämtland. Surrounded by magnificent nature and rich opportunities for outdoor activities, it offers peace, beautiful views, and a sense of community that makes the place truly unique.
In central Gäddede, about 275 people live, but together with the surrounding villages, Gäddede is a vibrant community. Here you’ll find a pizzeria, restaurants, a campsite, café, a grocery store (ICA), pharmacy, a small aircraft landing strip, tourist information center, and it’s only 5 kilometers from the Norwegian border.
The area is called Frostviken, a mountain valley known for its beautiful and untouched nature — popular for fishing, hiking, and hunting.
This region has one of the highest brown bear populations in Europe, and the wildlife is rich with moose, forest birds, lynx, and more. The area also has a strong Sami cultural presence and is used for reindeer grazing. Gäddede is also home to the world’s largest snowmobile, according to the Guinness World Records.

In summer, Vildmarksvägen is a popular destination, along with hiking and fishing in the area. Nearby, you can find local artisans such as ceramic makers from Häggnäset and the food producer Fågelbergetschark, known for its smoked and dried meats. The area around Gäddede is rich in natural resources and perfect for foraging mushrooms and berries.
In winter, Frostviken becomes a paradise for snowmobile riders, cross-country skiers, and other snowy adventures – including dog sledding and ice fishing on frozen lakes.
Fishing in Jämtland
In and around Gäddede, you'll find several excellent fishing waters, including the lakes Ankarvattnet, Kvarnbergsvattnet, and Ströms Vattudal, as well as many beautiful rivers and streams. Here, you can fish for trout, Arctic char, grayling, whitefish, and other species.

Vildmarksvägen
Vildmarksvägen is one of Sweden’s most famous and breathtaking roads, stretching from Strömsund in Jämtland to Vilhelmina in Västerbotten. It leads you through some of the country’s most untouched and dramatic nature – deep forests, mountain landscapes, wild rivers, and clear lakes.

Stekenjokk
About 80 km from Gäddede
Stekenjokk is a high mountain area in northern Sweden. The country’s highest road, about 850-1000 meters above sea level, passes over Stekenjokk, offering a fantastic opportunity to experience the mountain without hiking.
The road is only open during the summer, from early June to mid-October, due to extreme snowfall in winter.
Stekenjokk is a reindeer herding area for the Sami people, which means there is a good chance to see reindeer along the road.
Hällingsåfallet
About 20 km from Gäddede
At 800 meters long, Hällingsåfallet is Sweden’s longest canyon. The waterfall is spectacular, with a drop of 43 meters.
The canyon is located near Gäddede and has parking nearby, along with walking paths and viewing platforms, making it easily accessible for visitors.
Kalberget
About 20 km from Gäddede
A distinctive mountain at 682 meters above sea level, about 20 km southeast of Gäddede. The mountain is shaped like a "sleeping lion," which has given rise to one of its nicknames. There is a hiking trail up to the summit, approximately 6 km long, offering incredible views of Ströms Vattudal, Fågelsjön, Munsfjället, and other surrounding heights.
Korallgrottan
About 50 km from Gäddede
Sweden’s longest known cave, over 6 km long. Guided tours are available here during the summer.
Gaustafallet
Gaustafallet is a spectacular and dramatic waterfall located along Vildmarksvägen, surrounded by the powerful and untouched mountain nature of northern Jämtland. The water rushes forcefully through a narrow and steep canyon, creating an impressive and majestic sight that captivates both nature lovers and photographers. The easily accessible site is a popular stop for anyone traveling along Vildmarksvägen who wants to experience the magnificent wilderness up close.
Gaustafallet also holds a special place in cultural history, as it was used as a filming location for the movie Ronja Rövardotter.
